Brian Shab, a native of East San Jose who attended Piedmont Middle School and Independence High School, has dedicated his career to serving his community.
Brian’s professional journey began with eight years of dedicated service in the military, where he developed valuable leadership skills prior to embarking on a career with the San Jose Police Department in 1998. Over the years, he has worked various assignments, serving in the Patrol Division, Metro Unit, and MERGE Unit. Additionally, he served as a Field Training Officer and as a Sergeant in Research & Development. He later advanced to the role of Lieutenant, where he led officers in Patrol, Assaults Investigations, Gang Investigations, and Homicide.
In 2021, Brian was promoted to the rank of Captain and appointed as the Western Division Commander, where he oversaw operations and reaffirmed his commitment to community safety and effective leadership.
In 2022, he advanced to the role of Deputy Chief, where he managed the Bureau of Field Operations and served as the department's Executive Officer, playing a key role in both operational and strategic initiatives.
Throughout his career, Brian has received several commendations, including the department’s Medal of Valor, Hazardous Duty Award, Outstanding Police Duty Award, and Special Merit Awards.
Brian holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice management from Union University and is currently nearing completion of his master’s degree in law enforcement and public safety leadership from the University of San Diego. Additionally, he is a graduate of California POST Command College and PERF's Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP).
On Sunday, October 27th, 2024, Brian was appointed the role of Assistant Chief of Police where he assumed command of department operations.
