School Liaison Unit Overview
The School Liaison Unit (SLU) is dedicated to building and maintaining strong relationships between the San José Police Department and the 19 school districts within the city.
What We Do
SLU officers actively participate in:
- School safety and truancy committees
- Police investigations involving school-related crimes
- Student, parent, and staff presentations on safety and prevention topics
They also support and help implement specific, budgeted school safety programs.
Key Programs & Initiatives
✅ Emergency Response Protocol Training
Hands-on training for school staff and administrators on handling emergencies.
✅ Safe School Campus Initiative (SSCI)
Also known as the Emergency Response Protocol, this is the SLU’s primary program. It is a coordinated, citywide response plan involving:
- San José Police Department
- Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services (PRNS)
- County Probation
- Community-Based Organizations (CBOs)
The goal: Respond quickly and effectively to violence or threats of violence on school campuses.
✅ School Site Safety Meetings
Regular meetings with school staff to address safety concerns and improve campus security.
