Position

The goal of the Family Violence Unit is to address family violence issues by serving as the nucleus for a multi-agency effort. The Family Violence Unit focuses on three areas of behavior that most often victimize the family. The unit specifically addresses domestic violence, stalking/threat management, and child/elder dependent abuse.

We have received a grant from OVW (Office of Violence Against Women) to encourage arrest policies and enforcement specifically related to domestic violence. Part of our mission is to train police officers, prosecutors and judges how to conduct domestic violence strangulation investigations, how to collect forensic evidence, and how to prosecute those crimes effectively. In doing so, we can improve on the collection of our domestic violence strangulation statistics by inputting data directly into our automated report writing system. We can also use the domestic violence strangulation data to assess lethality. The intern in this position will work closely with Family Violence personnel to collect and disseminate the strangulation data to the proper organizations. Interns will assist with setting up officer training and staff meetings.

Duties

Interns will work closely with the Family Violence Unit officers and office staff. Duties may include recording domestic violence statistics and participation in the OVW grant to encourage arrest policies and enforcement of the protective order program. Interns will also assist with the National Strangulation Institute domestic violence study by gathering data and materials. Data entry of unclassified material, answering phone calls, and responding to emails from our community partners, and other office duties are all part of an intern’s responsibilities.

Position

The San Jose Police Department PAL (Police Activities League) Unit is responsible for providing programs for underprivileged youth in the community. Currently, we have 12 programs (boxing, baseball, soccer, football, cadets, etc) with about 10,000 participants.
PAL is responsible for providing outreach, information, and program registration. PAL personnel are also responsible for ensuring that the PAL Sports Complex is a well maintained, safe, and useable facility.

Duties

Interns will work closely with the PAL personnel to help run PAL efficiently and effectively. Duties may include outreach via social media, interacting with community members and answering questions pertaining to PAL programs. Interns will also be responsible for registering youth in the various programs. In addition, interns will also help plan and schedule upcoming events.

Desired Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in working with the public, especially with the underprivileged youth of the community. Excellent writing and oral communication skills are required. Spanish is a plus, but not a requirement. A solid understanding of and ability to navigate social media sites would be beneficial.

Position

The Robbery Unit is one of twelve investigative units in the Bureau of Investigations (BOI). The Robbery Unit conducts follow-up investigations of all robberies, extortions, kidnappings, grand theft “purse snatch” cases, and other robbery-related crimes. The Robbery Unit assists the Bureau of Field Operations (BFO) and other BOI units with investigation of serious felony crimes and other major incidents. The Robbery Unit participates in Department-wide community policing efforts by establishing community policing strategies through education, prevention and apprehension of suspects. Members of the Robbery Unit provide continuous training and education in robbery crime trends and investigation to other Department members.

The Robbery Unit publishes TRAK flyers (informational bulletins on active cases) and coordinates police artist services to the Department and other allied law enforcement agencies.

Duties

Interns will work closely with the forensic video technician in the Robbery Unit. Duties may include obtaining video surveillance footage from crime scenes, watching video surveillance footage at a detective’s direction, and obtaining still photographs from video surveillance footage. Duties may also include copying, transferring and duplicating electronic evidence to different devices such as USB, CD’s or portable disk drives.

Desired Robbery Specific Qualifications

• Knowledge with video machines located crime scenes, e.g. banks, liquor stores, etc. to be able to pull video surveillance footage.
• The ability to transfer video to storage devices such as USB drives, or portable disk drives.
• Knowledge of Video players to be able to playback the footage in the Robbery Unit. The most common players that we have are VLC and Windows Media Player.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office
• The ability to take direction and to watch the video and make note of the crime as it occurs, edit the video and make it presentable for a criminal case.

The San Jose Police Department’s Training Unit is charged with providing Continual Professional Training (CPT) that is mandated and approved by the stated agency Police Officer Standards and Training (POST). The required 24-hours of CPT will be delivered through a hybrid of live and online training. Perishable skills (EVOC, defensive tactics, firearms and communications) account for 14 of the required 24-hours. The online training is produced utilizing Adobe Captivate and Connect software.

Duties

Interns will work closely with the Training Unit instructors to develop various online/ distance learning and other training. Duties may include script writing and assistance in program development with an instructor for the Training Division

Position

The San Jose Police Department Vehicular Crimes Unit is responsible for the investigation of crimes related to vehicles, (Auto Theft, Hit and Run Accidents, Fatal Accidents) as well as the maintenance of the Vehicle Evidence Warehouse.

Duties

Interns will work closely with the vehicle crimes investigators. Duties may include answering phone calls, responding to emails from the victims of vehicular crimes, and assisting with maintaining the vehicle warehouse. The intern will also be responsible for running the misdemeanor hit-and-run contact letter program. This program sends letters to potential suspects of misdemeanor hit-and-run accidents, encouraging them to respond to the allegations.

Position

The video production detail is responsible for the development, coordination and production of videos and special presentations. This unit supports departmental training programs, public service announcements and various special projects at the direction of the Chief of Police. Much of the detail’s work now involves forensic analysis of digital media for the Bureau of Investigations.

Duties

Interns will work closely with the video unit staff and other department members as the need arises during various projects. Duties may include script writing, video editing, and A/V set up for various departmental events such as promotional and other award ceremonies.

Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in the marketing and messaging of the department to an internal audience, as well as to an external audience. Position

The Web Development Detail is responsible for the design, development, coordination and publication of web content, creating digital assets and forms, and the management of the public website at www.sjpd.org. The job also includes development, management and administration of the department's internal web CMS (content management system) as well as syndication with various social media accounts.

Duties

Interns will work closely with the webmaster and other department members as the need arises during various projects. Duties may include administering site updates, editing web content in HTML, editing and composing text for the web, creating and editing images for the web using a digital camera and Photoshop, creating or editing PDF forms using Acrobat Pro and/or Adobe LiveCycle Designer.

Desired Qualifications

Excellent writing and oral communication skills, as well as strong attention to detail, are required. Advanced digital photography skills are also desired as we anticipate a potential need to send an intern into the field to photograph police patrol officers and equipment and to take police department stock photographs to be used on the web site and other marketing materials. An intern may also be required to track new content updates and requests from department units, to help audit site updates and refresh the site.
