***UPDATE*** SJPD Arrests Suspect in 2024 Homicide #20

On August 11, 2024, at approximately 3:18 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a shooting at a business located in the 900 block of McLaughlin Avenue. Multiple reporting parties called police to report a shooting inside of the business. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male victim suffering from at least one gun shot wound. Officers began emergency medical care and summoned paramedics to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The unknown suspect fled prior to police arrival.

The San José Police Department Homicide Unit responded to the scene and conducted a comprehensive investigation into the incident. During the course of the investigation, Detectives identified the primary suspect as Lam Thanh Mac and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Detectives learned the suspect had immediately left the area after the incident and was believed to have fled to the greater Las Vegas Metropolitan area of Nevada.

Thanks to the vigilance of our community and the widespread attention this case received through social media and news agencies, critical information was brought forward that led to a significant break in the case. We are deeply grateful to everyone who shared information, kept this case in the public eye, and supported the search for justice.

On June 19, 2025, members of the San José Police Department’s MERGE Unit, Covert Response Unit (CRU), and the entire Special Operations Division assisted in taking the suspect into custody at a residence in the city of San José. He was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the event are still under investigation.

The identity of the victim was released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office.

This was the City's 20th homicide of 2024.
